Housewife killed, 10 injured in clash between rival BNP factions in Pabna

A housewife was killed and at least 10 others were injured in a violent clash and shooting between two rival factions of BNP supporters in Sujanagar upazila of Pabna district on Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as China Khatun, 40, wife of Shukur Ali, a resident of Bhatbila Paschimpara village under Manikhat union, died on the spot after being hit by gunfire.

According to sources, tensions had been simmering between supporters of Rafiqul Islam Raja, a former president of Hatkhali union Chhatra Dal, and a group led by local BNP supporter Islam Pramanik over dominance in the area. The situation escalated following a scuffle between members of the two groups on Sunday night.

Witnesses said that on Monday morning, supporters of the Islam Pramanik group gathered in the area with sticks. At that time, the rival Raja group allegedly launched an attack with sticks and arms, opening fire and vandalising houses. China Khatun was fatally shot during the clash.

At least 10 injured persons were rescued and taken to Sujanagar Upazila Health Complex and Pabna General Hospital for treatment.

Islam Pramanik claimed that tensions arose after his nephew was assaulted the previous night and alleged that the Raja group carried out a planned attack. However, Rafiqul Islam Raja denied the allegations, stating he was not present at the scene and termed the accusations as conspiratorial.

Confirming the incident, Sujanagar Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police Sadik Ahmed said police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. The body has been recovered and will be sent for autopsy.

Sujanagar Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Khoyem Uddin said an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the violence and those responsible.
