Court orders reopening of ‘Nobin Fashion’; summons police for explanation

A Dhaka court has ordered the reopening of ‘Nobin Fashion’ shop in the capital's Moghbazar within 24 hours, expressing concern over police inaction during its closure.

The court also directed the officer-in-charge (OC) of Hatirjheel Police Station to appear before it and submit a written explanation regarding the incident.

The order was issued on Wednesday by Md Mostafizur Rahman, acting suo motu, according to court sources.

According to the court, an online news report showed that a group of individuals, accompanied by police personnel, visited the ‘Nobin Fashion’ shop at Bishal Centre Market and forced it to shut down.

While some individuals behaved unruly, police reportedly remained passive, taking no action to maintain order.

The court noted that such inaction by law enforcement could instil fear among the public and questioned why such conduct should not be deemed unlawful and unprofessional.

It instructed the police officer to ensure the shop is reopened within 24 hours and to provide detailed identities of all involved.

The incident, captured on video, went viral on social media on March 20, a day before Eid-ul-Fitr.

Footage showed neighbouring traders demanding the shop close for selling panjabis at lower prices, with some comparing the discounted sales to “relief distribution.”
