DMCH interns’ 48-hr ultimatum over punishing attackers

Intern doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) have issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding punishment of those involved in Wednesday's violent attack on intern doctors by Dhaka University (DU) students. 

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, general secretary of Intern Doctors' Society Dr Nabil Bin Qasem warned of nationwide strikes if their four-point demands remain unfulfilled.

The incident sparked following a clash in the hospital emergency department with DU student Md Sanim. The six-member investigation committee has since prepared recommendations reflecting intern doctors' demands, including filing criminal cases, identification of attackers, passing a health protection law, and deploying 24/7 armed police.

While the committee's report aligns with intern doctors requirements, Dr. Nabil emphasized that they are now monitoring the actual implementation of recommendations. "If demands are not met within 48 hours, we will launch strict, simultaneous programs at hospitals across the country," he warned.

Earlier in the morning, intern doctors and students took out a protest procession from DMCH's Milon Chattar around 11 am. 

After the procession, they met with investigation committee members before holding the press conference.
