Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, 92, has been admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest and respiratory issues.

She is reported to be in critical condition under close medical supervision, with no official statement yet from her family. The news has sparked nationwide concern and renewed discussion on cardiac health risks in the elderly.

Hospitalisation after sudden cardiac arrest

On April 11, Asha Bhosle was rushed to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai following a cardiac arrest, with some reports also citing pulmonary complications. The 92-year-old singer is currently in the emergency medical unit under the care of Dr Pratit Samdani. While multiple outlets confirm the cardiac arrest, her doctor has declined to share further details, and no official family statement has been released.

Nationwide outpouring of concern

News of Bhosle’s health crisis has prompted an emotional response from across India, with fans, fellow artists, and public figures sharing prayers and tributes on social media. Her influence spans generations, and the incident has underscored her enduring role in India’s cultural identity. Messages reflect both admiration for her legacy and anxiety over her current condition.

Cardiac arrest risks in advanced age

Experts note that cardiac arrest risk rises significantly in older adults due to factors like heart disease, high blood pressure, and weakened heart muscles. In people in their 90s, lower resilience makes recovery more complex, and immediate intervention is critical. The incident has been used by health commentators to clarify the difference between cardiac arrest and heart attack, and to stress the importance of CPR and defibrillation.

Asha Bhosle’s unmatched musical legacy

With over 12,000 recorded songs in multiple languages, Asha Bhosle has redefined playback singing through her versatility and bold experimentation. Collaborations with R.D. Burman produced some of Hindi cinema’s most iconic tracks, and her accolades include the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and multiple National Film Awards. Beyond music, she has maintained cultural relevance through global performances, entrepreneurial ventures, and cross-generational appeal.
