Man killed in Rangamati wild elephant attack

A man was killed in a wild elephant attack in a remote area of Kaptai upazila in Rangamati district on Sunday evening.

The deceased was identified as Mongkhaiching Marma, 50, also known as Master, son of late Sathowai Pru Marma, a resident of Chitmorom Boro Para under the upazila.

According to locals, the incident occurred when the victim came face to face with a wild elephant. The animal reportedly attacked him with its trunk, killing him on the spot.

Union Parishad (UP) chairman Weshlimong Chowdhury confirmed the death.

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the Chattogram South Forest Division, SM Sajjad Hossain, termed the incident “unfortunate” and said forest officials have been dispatched to the scene.

He added that, as per government rules, the victim’s family is eligible for compensation of Tk 3 lakh.

Chandraghona Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) SM Saker said that authorities will take legal steps after conducting an investigation.
