Dhaka University (DU) is facing a security vacuum as its proctorial team's patrol vehicles remain non-functional for two consecutive days.
The crisis began when the primary patrol jeep suffered suspension failure, followed by mechanical faults in the 'Green Future Foundation' electric shuttle, leaving the team without functional transport service.
Till Saturday, the defective vehicles remained grounded in a garage at the heart of the capital. While crime rates at the Shahid Minar and Mazar areas persist, students expressed grave concern over the lack of surveillance.
Student Ratul Hasan said, "Muggings and drug-related incidents occur here; a murder even took place recently near the monument".
The DU campus is vulnerable, as zero mobile units are currently active.
Administrative Assistant Yusuf Harun said the repairing of the vehicles is delayed due to 'budgetary issues'. The Proctorial team members must now use 'rickshaws' to reach emergencies, he added.
DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed confirmed the two-day disruption of the transport service. But, he hopes to resume normal service of the vehicles soon. The current security is limited to stationary guards at university entrances.
