Trade halted at Hili land port over West Bengal polls

Import and export activities between Bangladesh and India through Hili Land Port in Dinajpur district have been suspended for a day on Thursday, in connection with the first phase of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly election.

According to officials, the restriction came into effect from Thursday morning and will remain in place until the evening. 

However, passenger movement through the Hili checkpost continues as usual.

Hili Customs C&F Agents Association President Md. Ferdous Rahman said that Indian traders have temporarily stopped exporting goods to Bangladesh due to the election. As a result, no goods are being exported from Bangladesh to India through the port either.

He added that operations will also remain closed on Friday due to the weekly holiday. 

Import and export activities are expected to resume normally from Saturday, he also added.
