Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) has announced a partial central committee of seven members for its youth wing, Jatiya Jubo Shakti, naming Tariqul Islam as president and Engineer Farhad Sohel as general secretary.

The committee was declared on Saturday afternoon at a coordination meeting held at a restaurant in the capital’s Banglamotor area. NCP member secretary and Rangpur-4 lawmaker Akhtar Hossain announced the new leadership, saying a full-fledged committee would be formed soon.

Under the new structure, Tuhin Mahmud and Khaled Mahmud Mostafa have been made senior vice presidents, while former coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Rifat Rashid has been appointed organising secretary. Yasin Arafat has been named senior joint organising secretary.

Akhtar Hossain said the committee was approved through a council vote at the 10th general meeting of the Jubo Shakti central committee and subsequently endorsed by the NCP. He later introduced the newly appointed leaders.

Jatiya Jubo Shakti was launched on May 16 last year, with Tarikul Islam as convener and Zahedul Islam as member secretary.

Earlier on April 19, after 45 leaders and activists from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and two other organisations joined NCP, Zahedul Islam stepped down as member secretary the following night, reportedly to make space for new entrants.

Party sources said he resigned to accommodate newly inducted leaders. The announcement was made at Saturday’s coordination meeting, though it was stated that the committee had been formed through a vote at the general meeting.
