Journalists Farzana Rupa and Mozammel Babu will now face trial in a case filed over alleged crimes against humanity related to the killings during Hefazat-e-Islam's rally at Shapla Chattar.
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has ordered them to appear before the court on May 14.
On Thursday (May 7), a two-member ICT-1 panel, led by Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud, issued the order.
The other member of the panel is Justice Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
During the hearing, the prosecution sought the issuance of production warrants against former minister Dr. Dipu Moni, journalists Farzana Rupa, and Mozammel Babu.
Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said Dr. Dipu Moni was serving as the foreign minister during the May 5, 2013 crackdown at Shapla Chattar. He alleged that she had promoted internationally the narrative that law enforcement agencies had 'eliminated a group of unruly people' during the operation.
He also alleged that journalists Farzana Rupa and Mozammel Babu had, from the beginning, broadcast provocative statements about Hefazat-e-Islam's rally through Ekattor Television.
Following the hearing, the tribunal ordered that the accused be produced before the court and scheduled the next hearing for May 14.
The case is currently under investigation. The tribunal also set June 7 for submitting the investigation report.
