
The vice-chancellor of University of Chittagong on Sunday said sports help strengthen connectivity and promote cultural exchange among students from different universities.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Bangladesh Inter-University Football Tournament 2026 at the university's central playground, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Al-Forkan described the occasion as a historic moment as the university hosted the competition after 44 years.
"Sports contribute not only to physical and mental development, but also to better inter-university relations. Through sports, connectivity grows and cultures are exchanged," he said at the opening ceremony.
The tournament began with participation from students and athletes representing 44 universities across the country.
The vice-chancellor welcomed the guests and athletes and expressed satisfaction over the disciplined participation of students. He said the competition would help strengthen positive competition, harmony and brotherhood among young people.
He also thanked the university's central students' union CHAKSU and the Department of Physical Education for organising the event and wished success for the tournament.
Presiding over the function, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Md Kamal Uddin said the university was proud to host the inter-university football tournament for the first time since 1982. He thanked the vice-chancellor for taking immediate steps to arrange the competition.
CHAKSU Vice-President Ibrahim Hossain Rony delivered a goodwill speech, while acting Director of the Department of Physical Education Habibur Rahman Jalal gave the welcome address.
The ceremony featured the hoisting of national, university and Olympic flags, followed by the release of balloons and festoons to formally inaugurate the tournament. Teachers, students, officials, invited guests and media representatives attended the programme.
