A market toll collector was hacked to death by unidentified miscreants at Amtali upazila of Barguna district on Wednesday night.

The deceased, identified as Monwar Hossain Mridha, 45, was a resident of Dakshin Amtali village and worked as an assistant to a local market leaseholder.

Locals found Monwar lying in a pool of blood near a canal bank adjacent to the Khuriar Kheya Ghat bridge.

He was rushed to Amtali Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor, Shubhendu Roy, declared him dead. According to medical staff, Monwar sustained deep wounds to both legs from sharp weapons and likely died due to excessive bleeding.

While Monwar officially worked as a toll collector and electrician, alleged he was involved in drug trafficking and consumption. Police suspect the killing may be linked to internal disputes regarding these activities.

"Monwar worked as my assistant in collecting tolls for the Khuriar Kheya Ghat market," said Firoz Khan Tapas, a local Union Parishad member.

Meanwhile, the victim's mother, Beauty Begum, has demanded justice for her son's murder.

Amtali Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Abu Shahadat Md. Hasnain Parvez stated that the body was sent to the Barguna morgue for an autopsy on Thursday morning.

"We are in the process of filing a case, and police operations are underway to apprehend those responsible," the OC added.
