A truck driver was arrested by police after recovering 82 kg hemp worth over Tk 16 lakh during a drive on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway at Chattogram’s Mirsharai upazila.
The drive was conducted by Mirsharai Police Station on Thursday night at a checkpoint set up in front of the police station gate on the Chattogram-bound lane of the highway.
The arrested driver was identified as Mashraf Uddin Rahat, 19, son of Abdur Rob from Sundarpur area of Feni Sadar upazila.
According to police, during preliminary questioning Rahat said that his assistant driver, Rakibul Islam Sujon, 31, got off the truck strategically in the Baraiyarhat area under Jorarganj Police Station and instructed him to drive the vehicle into Chattogram city.
Mirsharai Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Farida Yasmin, said a case has been filed against both the arrested suspect and the absconding assistant driver.
Police operations are ongoing to arrest the fugitive accused, added the OC.
