A man was allegedly beaten to death by his drug-addict son at Debidwar upazila of Cumilla on Saturday after his father refused to share the money from a recent land sale.

Deceased, Abdul Alim Chhenu Mia, 60, was a resident of the Alampur area under Debidwar municipality and worked as a security guard for a mobile network tower.

Following the incident, his eldest son, Najmul Hasan Russel, 35, went into hiding.

According to locals and the police, Rasel was a drug addict who frequently physically assaulted his father for money. Recently, Chhenu Mia sold a piece of land without informing Russel. When Russel came to know the matter, he confronted his father, demanding his share of the money.

At one stage of altercation, Russel repeatedly struck his father with a stick, leaving him severely injured.

Initially, family members kept Chhenu Mia at home and tried to treat his injuries. However, around 1:30 PM, when his condition deteriorated rapidly, they rushed him to Debidwar Upazila Health Complex, where on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Debidwar Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman confirmed the incident and  stated that the body has been sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.

"The matter is being investigated with the utmost priority. Although no official case has been filed yet, efforts are underway to apprehend Russel, who has fled the area," the OC added.
