2 SSC examinees drown while bathing in Gorai River

Two Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinees drowned while bathing in the Gorai River in Kushtia on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident took place beneath the Haripur connecting bridge adjacent to the town.

The deceased were identified as Apurba Ifti Taif, 18, son of Mahabul Islam of Hatsh Haripur area and an SSC candidate from The Kushtia Old High School, and Sakibul Islam, 19, son of Nurul Islam of Thanapara area and an SSC candidate from Kushtia Zilla School.

According to eyewitnesses, the two friends went to the river for bathing after finishing their examinations. They reportedly entered a deep section of the river and remained missing for a long time, raising suspicion among locals.

Later, locals informed Kushtia Fire Service and also started searching in the river. Before firefighters arrived, locals managed to recover the duo and rushed them to Kushtia General Hospital, where the on-duty doctors declared them dead.

Kushtia General Hospital Residential Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Iqbal Hasan confirmed the death and said that the bodies were brought to the hospital around 4:00 PM.

Kushtia Fire Service Senior Station Officer Arshed Ali said that locals rescued the duo before the fire service team reached the spot and sent them to the hospital.
