Two men were killed after being struck by lightning while harvesting paddy at Raninagar upazila of Naogaon district on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Akkas Fakir, 60, and Tarek Rahman, 22, son of Aminur Rahman. Both were residents of Paroil village of the upazila.

Local sources said Akkas and Tarek, along with several others, were busy cutting paddy. At around 11:30 AM, a sudden rainstorm accompanied by lightning strikes caught them off guard. Akkas and Tarek were severely struck by a thunderbolt and died on the spot. Later, co-workers discovered their lifeless bodies and informed their families.

Jahidur Rahman Jahid, Chairman of Paroil Union Parishad, confirmed the incident, stating that the sudden tragic deaths of the two farmers during their harvest work have cast a deep shadow of grief over the entire locality.

Raninagar Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Zakaria Mondal confirmed the matter and said a police team has already visited the spot after receiving the news.

Legal proceedings regarding the incident are currently underway, the OC added.
