Ties of Need

In joyous times and songs of glee, no one comes to care,
Without a selfish motive, you won't find a loved one there.
The halls of mirth are crowded, yet familiar faces wane,
Unless there is a use for us, as strangers we remain.

Beneath the festive, colored lights, we fade from every mind,
But when a sudden storm arrives, it's us they come to find.
The moment that the task is done, the closest friends depart,
To tell the truth, we human beings bear a selfish heart.

Affection now is tangled up in wealth and keeping score,
Without a promised profit, no one remembers anymore.
We wander in our private worlds, bound by our selfish creed,
We humans do not call for joy, we only call in need.
