Residents concerned about Bashundhara Sports City’s inclusion in DNCC

Bashundhara Sports City, built on an area of about 300 bighas in the heart of the capital city of Dhaka, is now known as one of the most modern sports infrastructures in Bangladesh.

It has modern facilities for various sports including cricket, football, swimming, hockey, athletics, badminton, basketball, and martial arts.

Bashundhara Kings Arena has already become one of the country’s most important venues by hosting international football matches. In addition, an international cricket stadium with a capacity of 25,000 people is under construction.

However, a new concern among the locals in the area has started- will the present orderly environment and security systems be maintained if Bashundhara Residential Area and Sports City come under the jurisdiction of Dhaka North City Corporation?

A section of residents claim that Bashundhara Welfare Society is currently managing security, cleanliness, roads, drainage and other civic services under its own management. As a result, the area is cleaner, safer and more planned than other areas of Dhaka.

They fear that if it comes under a City Corporation, illegal encroachment, traffic jams, unplanned commercial activities and various law and order problems may increase, which will harm the current environment.

In this regard, former MP Golam Maula Roni said, “I have enjoyed the security that I did not get in Dhanmondi for 30 years. I enjoyed it after coming to Bashundhara. I have not heard of any incident here in the last few years where police help was needed.”

He also said, “Many cantonments do not have a well-organized system like Bashundhara. This system should not be destroyed.”

Meanwhile, Bashundhara Welfare Society stated in a letter to the City Corporation administrator that a large part of the residents of the area are not interested in coming under a City Corporation. At the same time, a demand has been made to suspend the holding tax and service charges.

According to experts, an effective integrated administrative structure is required to manage large-scale planned residential and sports projects like Bashundhara. However, the main question now is what that structure will be and how the current standards and safety will be maintained.
