PIROJPUR, June 01: Unidentified miscreants allegedly vandalised idols, set fire to an idol and looted cash and cremation materials from the Kali Mandir at the municipal crematorium in Pirojpur early Monday, triggering tension in the area.

The incident took place between 3am and 3:30am, according to Officer in Charge of Pirojpur Sadar Police Station Mohammad Shariful Islam.

Locals discovered the damage in the morning and found that parts of the idols inside the temple had been vandalised. One idol had been taken outside and set on fire.

The temple's main gate was also broken, while the donation box and various items used for cremation were reportedly stolen.

Police were later informed, following which the Officer in Charge and the Superintendent of Police visited the scene.

Pirojpur Crematorium Committee President Sunil Chakraborty said he rushed to the site after receiving information about the incident.

"I went there after hearing the news and saw that the idol of Lord Shiva in the Kali temple inside the crematorium premises had been vandalised. The broken idol was taken outside and set on fire. The main gate was also damaged and several items used for cremation were stolen," he said.
