Leader of the opposition in parliament and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, on Wednesday expressed concern over ongoing economic pressures, rising prices of essentials, instability in the banking sector, and growing social disorder.
Speaking at a convention centre in Mirpur, he said key public concerns-including shortages of gas and water, inadequate communication infrastructure, drug abuse, juvenile crime, extortion, and illegal land grabbing-must be addressed through effective and urgent measures to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
He criticised repeated increases in fuel and gas prices, arguing that such hikes directly contribute to higher costs of essential goods, placing an additional burden on ordinary citizens. He urged the government to communicate economic realities transparently rather than relying on administrative measures or secrecy.
Expressing concern over the banking sector, he said uncertainty among depositors and shareholders in several financial institutions could weaken public confidence in the economy if not resolved promptly. He called on the authorities to protect public deposits and ensure financial stability.
