New committee formed to eliminate discrimination in women sports

The present government of Bangladesh Nationalist Party has taken special initiatives to eliminate discrimination against women in the country’s sports arena, ensure their safety, women empowerment and establish their rights.

A committee has been formed with five sports-friendly women as part of the initiatives.

The committee convener is national award-winning former national table tennis player Jobera Rahman Linu. 

Other four members of the committee are- Farida Yasmin, Member of Parliament for the reserved women’s seat of the National Parliament, Sarwat Siraj (Shukla), President of Bangladesh Women’s Sports Association, Nasrin Sultana, Professor of the Institute of Health Economics, Dhaka University, and Umme Israt, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, confirms an order signed on June 2 by Senior Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Angyajai Marma.

The mandate of this committee will be (a) to formulate strategies for the protection, security, participation, development and development of women’s talent in sports (b) to take steps to establish women’s participation and leadership in sports, (c) to provide training to potential women athletes emerging from the grassroots level for their participation on a larger scale, and to provide institutional and legal support, if necessary, (d) to take steps to ensure the health, nutrition, and mental development of athletes, including social status, (e) to eliminate the investment deficit in women’s sports and establish equal financial benefits for women (f) to establish sports as one of the means for establishing women’s rights and empowerment, and (g) to take steps to eliminate discrimination against women in sports, and to establish protection, security and equality. 

The committee will inform the government about its activities and progress in every two months, said the press release.
