Dhaka University (DU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam has resigned as president of the University Teachers Association of Bangladesh (UTAB), a BNP-aligned teachers' organisation, citing personal reasons.

He confirmed the resignation media on Friday.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Prof. Obaidul submitted his resignation letter on  May 31 to UTAB's chief patron and BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman. In the letter, he wrote that 'certain unavoidable personal circumstances' had made it difficult for him to devote adequate time to the responsibilities of the presidency.

He also pointed to his expanded workload since taking charge as vice-chancellor of Dhaka University. "The scope of my work has grown considerably. It has become very difficult for me to give UTAB the time I used to", he said in the letter.
