Ad-din Hospital will appeal to the government on Sunday against the cancellation of its licence by the Directorate General of Health Services following the deaths of six newborns in Dhaka’s Moghbazar area.

Ad-din Hospital will move an appeal on Sunday (June 14) against the government’s decision to cancel its operating licence, said its lawyer Advocate Shishir Monir on Thursday.

He said the law allows hospitals to appeal or seek review within 30 days of such an order, and the institution will submit its appeal to the relevant ministry within the stipulated time. He added that there is no legal restriction on hospital operations during the appeal process.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday cancelled the hospital’s licence following the deaths of six newborns at the facility in Moghbazar on May 27.

According to the DGHS order, a government-formed investigation committee found that oxygen shortage in the ward and negligence by hospital authorities led to the deaths.

The hospital was earlier issued a show-cause notice, but its explanation was found unsatisfactory. The notice was issued under the Medical Practice and Private Clinics and Laboratories (Regulation) Ordinance, 1982, which allows licence cancellation in such cases.

The order also states that the hospital may seek reconsideration of the decision within 30 days under the relevant legal provisions.
