‘Eternal championship contenders’ Brazil, FIFA ranking 6th, and Morocco, 7th, who are challenging to become the first African nation to win the World Cup, drew 1-1 after a fierce battle in their first match of the 2026 North America Central America World Cup.
The two teams in Group C of the tournament shared one goal each in their Group Stage opening match held on the 14th at the New York New Jersey Stadium in the United States. The clash between two strong title contenders was intense, but neither side managed to secure a victory.
Brazil fielded superstars including Real Madrid’s star winger Vinicius Junior, Barcelona’s top winger Raphinha, Casemiro, Marquinhos, and Premier League players Bruno Guimarães and Thiago in their starting lineup.

Morocco also showcased key players such as Brahim Diaz of Real Madrid, team captain and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) vice-captain Achraf Hakimi, and promising midfielder Ayoub Bouadi. The goalkeeper position was manned by Morocco’s ‘Yashin’ Yassine Bounou.
Morocco dominated the first half. From the opening whistle, they pressed Brazil with strong forward pressure and precise passing, forcing the Brazilian players into a defensive stance.
Morocco finally broke the deadlock in the 21st minute of the first half. The scorer was Ismael Saibar, 25 years old, who plays for PSV Eindhoven. As Brazil pushed forward to gain control, Saibar, playing as Morocco’s striker, swiftly penetrated the gap behind Brazil’s defense and chipped a perfectly weighted through ball over goalkeeper Alisson with an exquisite one-touch lobbed shot.
However, Brazil had their hero in Vinicius. In the 32nd minute of the first half, while under pressure, Vinicius took control of the ball on the left flank, destroyed Morocco’s right side with his signature dribbling, and unleashed a powerful shot that rocketed into the top right corner of the goal, leveling the score at 1-1.
Brazil regained dominance in the second half after tactical adjustments. Substituting Casemiro for Liverpool’s Fabinho, Brazil pushed their central midfielders forward and spread their wingers wider to break Morocco’s pressure. Morocco responded with a solid defense and sharp counterattacks.
Despite Brazil’s continuous attacks and Morocco’s sharp counters in the second half, no further goals were scored. The clash between the two title contenders ended in a 1-1 draw. Both Morocco and Brazil are now set to compete for first place in Group C, depending on the results of their upcoming matches against Haiti and Scotland.
