Former Somoy TV MD sent to jail in fraud case

A Dhaka court on Thursday sent former Managing Director of Somoy Television Ahmed Zobayer to jail after rejecting his bail petition in a case filed over allegations of fraud, breach of trust and document forgery.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain passed the order after Ahmed Zobayer and three other accused surrendered before the court and sought bail.

The court, however, granted bail to the other three accused, Ahmed Rafid Kader Rivu, Sheikh Mahmud Yasin and Sunny Chowdhury in the same case.

The order came a day after the court issued arrest warrants against six accused, including Ahmed Zobayer, as none of them appeared before the court despite a previous summons.

According to the case documents, the case was filed by one Asaduzzaman against six people, including Ahmed Zobayer, accusing them of fraud, breach of trust and forgery of documents.

On May 10, the court issued summons asking the accused to appear before it by June 17. As they failed to appear on the scheduled date, the court issued arrest warrants against them.

The two other accused named in the warrant are Ahmed Zobayer’s wife Shamima Sultana Chowdhury and their child Saraf Nawar Joyita.

Advocate Farhad Hossain appeared for the accused during the hearing.
