The UK unit of the Awami League has filed a case against three National Citizen Party (NCP) leaders and activists, including southern region chief organiser Hasnat Abdullah MP, at Cambridge Police Station in the United Kingdom, alleging assault. The other accused are NCP joint convener Ehtesam Haque and NCP UK Alliance member Zakir Chowdhury, according to Hasnat Abdullah.
Police have reportedly taken Zakir Chowdhury into custody for questioning in connection with the incident, and his interrogation was ongoing till filling of this report at 9:30pm on Saturday.
In a press statement, it was claimed that the case was part of continued propaganda and harassment by Awami League supporters in the UK. It further said the allegations of "gross assault" were aimed at wasting the time of UK law enforcement agencies.
The statement also said that a specialised agency has begun an investigation into Awami League activities in the UK and their potential impact on public safety.
Hasnat Abdullah, according to the statement, expressed gratitude for the professional conduct of UK law enforcement agencies.
It further claimed that attempts to disrupt his speech at the Oxford Union, diaspora meetings and other political activities across the UK had failed, along with previous efforts to obstruct him politically.
