A truck driver and his assistant were killed in a road accident in Sadar Upazila of Kushtia on Sunday morning.
The accident took place on the Kushtia bypass road, between the Trimohoni and Bottoil areas at around 8:30am.
The deceased were identified as driver Anichur Rahman Anis and his assistant Ratan, both residents of Sadar Upazila in Faridpur District.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kushtia Chourhas Highway Police Station Sheikh Sekendar Ali said that the truck was transporting stones from Sonamasjid in Chapainawabganj to Faridpur when it lost control on the bypass road.
The vehicle skidded off the road, overturned into a ditch and caught fire shortly after the crash, which left both the driver and his helper dead on the spot, the OC added.
Being informed, fire service personnel rushed to the scene and brought the blaze under control.
The firefighters then recovered the driver’s body, while the assistant’s body was later retrieved from beneath the stone load.
Kushtia Fire Service Senior Station Officer Arshed Ali said preliminary indications suggest the crash may have been caused by a mechanical failure or driver fatigue.
He added that the exact cause would be known after investigation.
