Police and Fire Service personnel recovered the body of a mentally-challenged woman from the Kaptai Lake near the Social Services Office in Rangamati Town on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Mukta Barua, 28, wife of Abhijit Barua, a resident of the BGB Road area in the town.

According to police and local sources, a child, named Abdullah, spotted the body of a woman floating in the lake water in the morning.

Later on, members of Rangamati Fire Service and Civil Defence recovered the body and handed it over to the police.

Police then sent the body to Rangamati General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station Md Jasim Uddin said the deceased was mentally unstable and her husband had earlier filed a general diary reporting her missing.

However, the exact reason behind her death would be known after getting the autopsy report, the OC added.
