MYMENSINGH, June 21: Financial grant cheques approved by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Board of Trustees have been distributed among the families affected by road accidents in the district.

These cheques were distributed at a programme organised in the Zilla Parishad conference room on Friday afternoon.

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Chowdhury was present as the chief guest at the programme.

At a brief discussion meeting, the State Minister said that people’s ignorance is responsible for most road accidents. To keep the roads safe, everyone, including drivers, passengers and pedestrians, must behave responsibly.

He said that illegal shops and roads are being set up at various places on the highway, creating obstacles to business and trade and traffic. In addition, many accidents are also happening due to incompetent drivers. If everyone is aware, road accidents can be significantly reduced.

After the discussion, 34 families of the deceased in road accidents were given financial assistance cheques of Tk 5 lakh each and Tk 1 lakh to Tk 3 lakh to the families of 16 injured. At that time, a total of 50 families were given grants of Tk 1.96 crore.

According to BRTA sources, a total of Tk 8.30 crore has been distributed among the people and families affected by road accidents in Mymensingh District through the Board of Trustees since 2024.
