DU student, mother, two sisters murdered; suspect beaten dead

NOAKHALI, June 25: A student of Dhaka University (DU) along with her mother and two sisters were killed in a brutal attack at their rented home of Raipur upazila of Laxmipur district on Thursday, while the suspected attacker later beaten dead by an angry mob.

The victims were identified as Shahinur Begum, 38, her elder daughter DU student Sayma Akter, 21, and her two younger daughters--Ikra Akter, 17, a Class XII student of Raipur Kazi Faruki College and Shifa Akter, 9, residents of Godown Road area under Ward No. 3 of Raipur municipality and hailing from from Cumilla district.

Police and locals said the victims were attacked with a sharp weapon. Shahinur, Sayma and Shifa were taken to Raipur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead. Ikra, who was critically injured, was referred to Dhaka for better treatment but died on the way.

Lakshmipur Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Abu Tareq said Antor Majumdar, 35, son of Katrik Majumdar of Noakhali district, stormed the house around 11:00am and hacked Shahinur and her three daughters indiscriminately.

Meanwhile, hearing screams of the victims, locals rushed in and managed to catch Antor. They later gave him a good beating, leaving him injured.

On information, police rushed to the spot and rescued him.

At that time, agitated locals hurled brick chips at the policemen, leaving 6-7 of them injured.

After the rescue, Antor was taken to the Sadar Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries later.

The bodies were sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy, the SP said. Locals said Antor had lived as a tenant in the same building a few months ago and worked as a fruit vendor.

The motive behind the attack could not be confirmed yet, said police.

"The exact reason behind the incident is still unknown. We are investigating the matter and will be able to provide details after the investigation," Tareq said.

Raipur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Baharul Alam said five injured people were brought to the hospital following the incident. He confirmed that the mother and two daughters were declared dead at the hospital, while the injured daughter later died while being taken to Dhaka.
