
LAXMIPUR, July 3: Residents of Char Ruhita union in Laxmipur Sadar Upazila formed a human chain on Friday protesting against drug abuse and gambling in the area.
The programme was held at Saddar Pol after Juma prayers under the banner of Saddar Pol Jubo Samaj.
Speakers at the rally issued a stern warning to drug dealers and addicts and urged authorities to take stronger action against them.
The event was chaired by Md Abu Bakar Siddique, former secretary of the District Sramik Kalyan Federation. Mohiuddin Patwari Bitu, general secretary of Sadar Upazila (West) BNP, addressed the gathering as the chief guest.
Among others who spoke were Nazrul Islam Sabuj, General Secretary of Char Ruhita Union BNP; Shahjalal Raju, President of Ward No 1 BNP; Abul Basar, Vice-President of the ward Jamaat; Jamaat leader Humayun Kabir; Abdur Rahman Rupom, Convener of the union Krishak Dal; and Tuhin Hossain, Joint Convener of the union Swechchhasebak Dal.
The speakers said both drug users and traffickers are responsible for creating social disorder and must be resisted collectively by the community.
They also urged law enforcement agencies to intensify their efforts to implement the government's zero-tolerance policy against drugs effectively.
"Every locality should declare a war against drugs," the speakers said.
