A 19-year-old football fan allegedly died by suicide in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia after reportedly being unable to cope with Brazil's defeat in the FIFA World Cup, according to his family and police.

The deceased, identified as Ratan, was the son of Hossain Ali Mistri of Ghoraighat village under Koya Union. A day labourer by profession, he is survived by his wife and a two-month-old daughter.

According to police and local sources, Ratan watched the Brazil-Norway World Cup match on Sunday night, in which his favourite team, Brazil, lost. Family members and locals alleged that he became mentally distressed following the defeat and after being mocked by supporters of the rival team. They said he later went to his room and allegedly died by suicide by hanging.

Ratan's father, Hossain Ali Mistri, said his son went to sleep after watching the match. Around 11:00 am on Monday, family members received no response from him and broke open the door, finding him hanging from a ceiling beam. He was taken to a local hospital, where the attending physician declared him dead.

Amirul Islam, Investigation Officer of Kumarkhali Police Station, said Ratan was a devoted Brazil supporter. "Our preliminary findings suggest he took his own life after being unable to cope with his team's defeat," he said, adding that the incident is under investigation.
