A man from Brahmanbaria was arrested from Dhaka’s Banani area on Sunday night for allegedly posting offensive content on Facebook targeting Islam and Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), police said. The arrested individual, identified as Pranesh Modak, was detained by officers of Banani Police Station under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) following a complaint linked to a post that reportedly triggered tension in Brahmanbaria’s Bijoynagar upazila.
According to police sources, the Facebook post in question was shared around three days earlier, which led to unrest in the Chandura area under Bijoynagar upazila of Brahmanbaria. Acting on digital tracking and information received from Brahmanbaria, police conducted a raid and arrested Pranesh Modak from the Karail slum area under Banani around 8:00 pm on Sunday. He is a resident of Chandura village under Chandura Union in Bijoynagar upazila and son of Pran Ballav Modak. Police later produced him before the court. His mobile phone was seized and sent to the forensic laboratory of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Bangladesh for digital examination.
Banani Police Station (Investigation) Officer said that although allegations of hurting religious sentiments have initially been raised, investigators have not yet confirmed the extent of the accused’s involvement. He added that forensic analysis of the seized mobile phone, along with ongoing investigation, would determine the factual circumstances before further legal steps are taken. Police also noted that Pranesh Modak had previously been arrested in January in connection with a similar allegation.
Confirmation of the arrest was provided by the Officer-in-Charge of Bijoynagar Police Station, Ahshan Ullah, who verified the incident. Authorities said further action will follow based on forensic reports and investigation findings.
