Typhoon Bavi hits China; 17 killed in Philippines landslides

Typhoon 'Bavi' has hit Zhejiang province in eastern China. According to the country's state media, Bavi is expected to weaken gradually.

News agency Xinhua reported, Typhoon Bavi made landfall in China on Saturday, at 11:20 PM local time. The storm caused heavy rainfall in Taiwan and Japan’s southern islands too.

Bavi is the second typhoon to hit China in just over a week. Last weekend, Typhoon 'Maysak' struck the southern part of the country.

Chinese authorities have already evacuated more than 1.7 million people to safe places yesterday due to Typhoon Bavi. Alert has been issued in the eastern part of the country. The maximum wind speed near the center of Bavi was recorded at 144 kilometers per hour.

After hitting land, Bavi is moving further northwest. As a result, it is expected to weaken gradually.

China's national meteorological agency had earlier issued an 'orange alert' for Bavi. There is a four-tier warning system for typhoons. This alert is the second highest.

On the contrary, the Philippines is experiencing heavy rain under the influence of a strong southwest monsoon. The impact of Typhoon Bavi on Friday night added to this. At least 17 people have been reported dead in landslides due to the hostile weather.

In Taiwan, at least 134 people were injured due to strong winds and heavy rain, according to the local weather bureau.

Around 14,210 people were evacuated to safe places in Taiwan due to the adverse weather. People were moved especially from Taichung city and Hualien county. Schools, offices, and most restaurants have been closed across Taiwan.
