Two farmers were killed in separate lightning strikes while working in their fields amid heavy rain in Debiganj upazila of Panchagarh on Wednesday.
The incidents occurred between 11:30 am and noon in Debiganj Sadar and Dandapal unions.
The deceased were identified as Md. Mamun Islam, 30, son of Khadimul Islam, from the Sonahar Malchandi Paschim Telipara area under Ward No. 9 of Debiganj Sadar Union, and Akabbar Khan, 60, a farmer from Shimultali village in Dandapal Union.
According to local sources, Mamun Islam was struck by lightning at around 11:40 am while cutting jute in his field. Locals rescued him and rushed him to Debiganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physician, Dr. Atikur Rahman, declared him dead.
In a separate incident on the same day, Akabbar Khan was struck by lightning while working on agricultural land in Shimultali village under Dandapal Union. He died on the spot after being hit during the rainfall.
The two incidents have cast a pall of grief over the affected communities. Locals urged people to avoid working in open fields during thunderstorms and to remain vigilant throughout the monsoon season.
