Call for coordinated efforts to address climate change impacts

KHULNA, July 15: Speakers at a workshop on Wednesday said the country is facing increasing losses and damages due to climate-related disasters, including cyclones, storm surges and floods. They stressed the need for coordinated efforts by government and non-government organisations to address the issue and support the victims.

They said these at the capacity-building workshop, organised jointly by the Department of Environment (DoE) and the NGO Adams Foundation under the Multi-Actor Partnership Project, held at the Khulna DoE’s conference room.

Director and Executive Magistrate of the DoE Md Asifur Rahman attended the programme as the chief guest while Adams Foundation Executive Director SM Ali Aslam chaired the event.

Head of the Environmental Science Discipline at Khulna University Professor Dr Md Mujibur Rahman and Associate Professor Dr Anjum Tasnuva of the Institute of Disaster Management (IDM) at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) presented keynote papers.

Among others, Executive Magistrate of the DoE Mumtaz Begum, Deputy Directors Sardar Shariful Islam and Mihir Lal Sardar, and Acting Deputy Chief Information Officer of the Khulna Regional Information Office Md Mehedi Hasan addressed the event.

Project Coordinator Zillur Rahman presented an overview of the project, while Adams Foundation Deputy Executive Director Ashik Mahmud moderated the workshop.

The project is being implemented locally by Adams Foundation, nationally by ICCAD and internationally by Germanwatch.
