At least 10 workers sustained burn injuries in a fire that broke out at the Confidence Salt Factory in Boalkhali upazila of Chattogram on Thursday.
The fire started at around 11AM while the workers were working at the factory in the West Gomdandi area of Boalkhali Municipality. All injured workers were rescued and taken to the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of Chattogram Medical College (CMCH) Hospital for treatment.
According to preliminary reports, the fire was initially believed to have been caused by an electrical short circuit.
However, Boalkhali Police Station OC Md Mozaffar Hossain later said the blaze started while welding work was being carried out inside the factory. Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the incident.
The injured workers are Didarul Alam, 32, of Boalkhali; Ujjal Das, 53, of Rangunia; Mohammad Liton, 28, of Sadarghat in Chattogram city; Sirajul Islam, 34, of Lohagara; Jahidul Alam, 42, of Rauzan; Jahid Hossain, 38, of Boalkhali; Nur Nabi, 25, of Boalkhali; Mohammad Alam, 45, of Patiya; Mahamudul Haque, 45, of Patiya; and Selim Uddin, 30, of Chandanaish.
SI Alauddin, the officer in charge of the CMCH Hospital Police Outpost, confirmed that all 10 injured workers had been admitted to the hospital, adding that, the condition of five to six of them is critical.
