Chargesheets to be filed only against those found guilty: DB chief
The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is investigating 59 cases linked to the July Movement, with chargesheets to be submitted only against those found guilty after thorough investigations, DB chief Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam said on Thursday.
Speaking at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre, Shafiqul said investigators are examining each case in phases, verifying the location and role of every accused while analysing forensic evidence before finalising the reports.
"There are many accused in each case. We have to determine who was present where, what role they played, and verify everything through forensic analysis," he said.
The DB chief said investigators are analysing around 40GB of data related to the July Movement and are handling the cases with utmost seriousness to ensure legal action against those responsible.
"We are working meticulously so that the investigation reports can ensure the maximum punishment allowed under the law," he added.
Responding to a question about allegations that some cases may have been filed with ulterior motives, Shafiqul said the investigation would remain evidence-based.
"If anyone has filed a case with a different motive, we will not accept that. I assure you that every case will be investigated properly, and chargesheets will be filed only against those found guilty," he said.
Asked whether the investigation was facing any challenges, the DB chief acknowledged that the process was complex due to the volume of evidence and the large number of accused.
"There is a huge amount of data to analyse, and each incident involves different accused. Every piece of information has to be verified and sorted carefully," he said.
