Olise breaks Pelé's record

French winger Michael Olise created World Cup history even though his team was defeated by England in a high scoring 6-4 match. Olise set up Mbappé for his 22nd World Cup goal in this match, which broke the 50 year long record of Brazilian legend Pelé. Yahoo Sports confirmed.
Olisé’s pass marked his seventh assist in the 2026 World Cup. With this contribution, he broke the long-standing record held by Brazilian legend Pelé for over 50 years. Pelé had registered six assists in six matches during Brazil's triumphant 1970 World Cup campaign.
Due to the expansion of the World Cup to a 48-team format this year, Olise featured in one more match than Pelé. However, the French attacker maintained an identical average of one assist per game.
Olise started Saturday's fixture with five tournament assists and provided the final passes for both of Mbappé's goals. He equaled Pelé's historic tally in the 48th minute, sparking France's second-half rally after trailing 4-0 at halftime.
Despite the record, Olise faced missed opportunities during the match. He failed to convert several scoring chances as France attempted to secure the largest comeback in World Cup history. No team has ever successfully overcome a four-goal deficit in the tournament. France had multiple chances to draw level, but their attempts missed the target.
Olise emerged as one of the standout forwards of the competition, forming a potent attacking trio alongside Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé. Nevertheless, defensive and midfield vulnerabilities cost the French team. They suffered a 2-0 defeat against Spain in the semifinals before their poor first-half display against England sealed their fate in the third-place match.
