Law, moral education key to meaningful social change: Alal
BNP Chairperson's Adviser Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal on Monday said meaningful social change can only be achieved through a combination of respect for the law and strong moral education.
He made the remarks while addressing a discussion titled "Drugs and the Deep Conspiracy of Awami League Allies as Obstacles to the Spread of Education", organised by the Democracy Forum.
"If the law is combined with an inner willingness to obey it, many social problems can be prevented. Without that mindset, change is difficult," Alal said.
Referring to political developments, he said the BNP has been enduring challenges for the past 19 years, adding that the country's democratic institutions suffered a major setback in 2007.
Highlighting the broader role of education, Alal said it should extend beyond textbooks to include moral, family, religious, practical and internationally relevant learning.
He stressed that family values play a crucial role in shaping an individual's character, saying strong moral foundations established at home help guide people throughout their lives.
Calling for reforms in the education sector, Alal said the system should be updated to reflect changing social realities and public needs.
He also alleged that the education sector was undermined during the Awami League government's tenure through irregularities such as question paper leaks, adding that strengthening moral values would also help curb drug abuse.
Citing improvements in Dhaka's traffic management, he said AI-powered surveillance cameras have encouraged greater compliance with traffic rules. However, he argued that lasting progress depends on developing a culture of voluntary law-abiding behaviour rather than relying solely on fear of punishment.
Alal said work is underway to formulate a comprehensive education policy and expressed hope that it would strengthen moral values and improve the country's education system.
"The greatest achievement in life is when people remember someone as a good person after their death," he said.
The programme was chaired by Democracy Forum President Alhaj VP Ibrahim and moderated by its coordinator Ismail Hossain Siraji. Among others, BNP Vice-Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Principal Alamgir Hossain, AKM Mozzammel Haque and Dr Anisul Awal also spoke at the event.
