BARI holds training on coffee, cashew cultivation

The Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) on Tuesday organised a daylong training programme on coffee and cashew cultivation and processing technologies at the Raikhali Hill Agricultural Research Centre in Kaptai upazila of Rangamati.

Funded by the Cashew and Coffee Research, Development and Extension Project (BARI Component), the training brought together 30 scientific assistants from BARI research centres in Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban.

BARI Director (Service and Supply) Dr Md Mosharraf Hossain Molla attended the programme as the chief guest. He stressed the importance of expanding coffee and cashew cultivation in the hill districts, promoting modern farming technologies and disseminating research findings at the field level.

The programme was chaired by Chief Scientific Officer of the Raikhali Hill Agricultural Research Centre Dr Muhammad Ziaur Rahman and conducted by Scientific Officer Mahmudul Hasan. Scientists from BARI's regional research centres also addressed the event.

At the end of the programme, BARI distributed saplings of improved fruit tree varieties to local farmers as part of the National Tree Plantation Programme. The chief guest and other participants also inaugurated a tree plantation campaign.

During the training, participants received practical and theoretical lessons on the cultivation, management, disease control, post-harvest handling and processing of coffee and cashew.
