River erosion ravages Nageshwari, hundreds homeless

River erosion has intensified in Nageshwari upazila of Kurigram, leaving hundreds of families homeless and destroying houses, cropland and other property over the past month.

According to local sources, rising water levels and strong currents in the Dudhkumar, Brahmaputra and Gangadhar rivers have accelerated erosion along riverbanks, causing extensive damage in several unions, including Bamandanga, Berubari, Nunkhawa, Kaliganj, Narayanpur, Rayganj, Kachakata and Ballaverkhas.

Locals said more than 300 houses have been washed away in the past month, along with large areas of agricultural land, orchards and permanent structures. Many affected families have been forced to relocate, while others have taken shelter on embankments after losing their homes.

In Bamandanga Union alone, around 60 houses in Ward No. 7 have been lost to erosion, local Union Parishad member Babul Mia said. He added that unless urgent measures are taken, the entire ward could be swallowed by the river.

Gazee Mia, one of the affected residents, died 26 days ago after reportedly suffering the shock of losing his home and belongings to river erosion, locals said.

Babul Mia alleged that despite repeated appeals, no permanent measures have been taken to prevent erosion. He said the Bangladesh Water Development Board had previously placed a limited number of geo bags along the riverbank, but the effort did not provide lasting protection.
