BIISS Holds Seminar on 3 Decades of BIMSTEC

The Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organised a seminar titled ‘Three Decades of BIMSTEC: Advancing Regional Cooperation for Shared Prosperity’ at the BIISS Auditorium in Dhaka on Monday (July 20).
Organized in light of Bangladesh's ongoing Chairmanship of BIMSTEC, the seminar aimed to generate informed policy discourse on strengthening regional cooperation for shared prosperity.
Shama Obaed Islam, MP, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, attended the seminar as the Chief Guest, while Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey, Secretary General of BIMSTEC, attended as the Special Guest.
BIISS Director General Major General A S M Ridwanur Rahman delivered the welcome address, followed by a keynote presentation from BIISS Research Director Dr Mahfuz Kabir.
Panel presentations were delivered by Prof Dr Rasheduzzaman of the Department of International Relations, University of Dhaka, and Prof Dr Kazi Maruful Islam, Director of the Centre on Budget and Policy, University of Dhaka. The session was chaired by Major General A N M Muniruzzaman (Retd), President of the Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS).
The keynote and panel discussions evaluated the evolution of BIMSTEC over the past three decades, assessing opportunities and challenges in institutional capacity, regional connectivity, economic cooperation, and priority sectors. Participants stressed the need for practical, action-oriented initiatives to foster peace, stability, resilience, and sustainable development in the Bay of Bengal region.
An interactive open discussion followed, where attendees exchanged views on trade and investment, security cooperation, connectivity, and people-to-people engagement.
Speaking as the Special Guest, Secretary General Indra Mani Pandey highlighted ongoing BIMSTEC initiatives, including women's development, climate adaptation, energy grid interconnection, counterterrorism, cyber and maritime security, visa facilitation, and tourism.
In her address, Chief Guest Shama Obaed Islam reaffirmed Bangladesh's strong commitment to BIMSTEC and a prosperous Bay of Bengal region. She emphasized translating regional commitments into concrete actions and highlighted Bangladesh's focus-as current Chair-on advancing economic integration, trade, investment, the Blue Economy, and people-centric cooperation. She expressed confidence that the seminar's recommendations would help guide Bangladesh's leadership during its chairmanship.
Senior government officials, ambassadors, representatives of BIMSTEC member states, academics, armed forces personnel, development partners, media representatives, and policy practitioners participated in the seminar.
