Charge framing decision against Matiur Aug 3

A Dhaka court will decide on August 3 whether to frame charges against former National Board of Revenue (NBR) official Matiur Rahman in a graft case over alleged illicit assets worth more than Tk 5.4 crore.

The order was scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday by the court of Dhaka Divisional Special Judge B.M. Tarikul Kabir. However, the hearing was deferred as the judge was on leave, court sources said.

Matiur, who gained public attention over the widely discussed “goat controversy,” was brought from jail to the court premises but was not produced before the court during the proceedings.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed cases against Matiur and his second wife on December 15, 2024, accusing them of acquiring illegal wealth and concealing asset information.

According to the charge sheet, Matiur concealed assets worth Tk 1.24 crore and amassed illicit wealth totaling Tk 5.40 crore through abuse of power, bribery and corruption during his government service.

Matiur was arrested by Detective Branch (DB) police on January 14, 2025 and has remained in custody since then.

He came under public scrutiny in 2024 after social media posts linked him to the purchase of a goat worth Tk 1.5 million from Mohammadpur’sSadiq Agro ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
