4 held over robbery plot in Lakshmipur

Detectives arrested four suspected robbers with a cache of locally made weapons and burglary tools while they were allegedly preparing to carry out a robbery in Chandraganj, police said on Tuesday.

The raid was conducted around 11:00pm on Monday after detectives received a tip-off that a group had gathered near Siam LPG Filling Station on the Lakshmipur-Chourasta highway.

The arrested were identified as Moktaruzzaman, 35, of North Char Ababil Union; Sadeq Hossain Mal, 38, and Manik Bepari, 32, both of Haimchar upazila in Chandpur; and Masud, 40, of Raipur upazila in Lakshmipur.

During the operation, detectives seized a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, a machete, a large cleaver, a sword-like knife, two knives, two iron rods, a screwdriver, a wrench, two knee pads, three mobile phones, part of a bedsheet and a torn lungi, which police said were intended for use in the planned robbery.

Police said another suspect, identified as Swapan, along with two or three others, managed to flee the scene after sensing the presence of law enforcers.

Officer-in-Charge of the District Detective Branch Muhammad Alamgir Hossain said legal action had been initiated against the arrested suspects, while efforts were underway to capture those who escaped.
