River pirates loot two sand depots in Gazipur

A group of suspected river pirates allegedly attacked two sand depots in Kaliganj upazila, assaulting a businessman, attempting to abduct a depot manager and looting cash, fuel and other valuables, police said.
The attack took place in the early hours of Tuesday in the Sombazar area under Tumlia Union. Officer-in-Charge of Kaliganj Police Station Md Zakir Hossain confirmed the incident on Wednesday.
The injured businessman, Manjur Hossain, 60, is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
According to family members and local residents, 20 to 25 armed men arrived by engine-powered trawler from the Rupganj direction. They first tied up a security guard before forcing him to call Manjur out of his office. The attackers allegedly beat him, took the keys to the cash box and fled with several lakh taka in cash from sand sales, mobile phones and the digital video recorder (DVR) of the depot's CCTV system.
The group then boarded a nearby dredger, tied up four workers and looted drums of fuel worth over Tk 100,000, locals said.
The attackers also raided a second sand depot, where they allegedly assaulted manager Delwar Hossain and took Tk 20,000-25,000 in cash, a mobile phone and another CCTV DVR. They reportedly forced him onto their trawler, but he escaped by jumping into the river and swimming ashore.
Police visited the scene soon after the incident and launched an investigation.
OC Zakir Hossain said no written complaint had been filed by the victims as of Tuesday night.
"The incident is being investigated seriously. Legal action will be taken once a formal complaint is received," he said.
