NBR sets Tk 10,588 crore revenue target for Benapole customs

National Board of Revenue (NBR) has set a revenue collection target of Tk 10,588 crore for Benapole Customs House for the 2026-27 fiscal years. New goal comes on the heels of a Tk 4,731 crore revenue deficit recorded in the outgoing fiscal year.

Despite the high target, the NBR revised the figure down by Tk 702 crore compared to the previous year's original target.

According to customs sources, the target for Benapole Customs House in FY 2025-26 was Tk 11,290 crore. However, actual collection stood at Tk 6,559 crore by the end of the year, leaving a massive deficit of Tk 4,731 crore. During the same period, import volume through Benapole land port fell by approximately 197,000 metric tons.

While customs officials expressed optimism about meeting the new target, traders cautioned that achieving it will be difficult without expanding legitimate trade facilities, tackling smuggling and tax evasion, and lifting existing trade restrictions.

Customs records show that 130 cases of fraud were detected at Benapole over the past six months. Additionally, four cases were filed last month involving the alleged smuggling of goods worth nearly Tk 20 crore, naming 57 individuals as accused, including personnel from customs, the port, security agencies, and the business community.

‘To meet the revenue target, there is no alternative to increasing import volume, ensuring transparency in trade, and taking effective measures to curb smuggling and irregularities,’ said Aminul Haque, Vice President of the Benapole Import-Export Association.

Responding to the concerns, Rahat Hossain, Assistant Commissioner of Benapole Customs House, said, ‘Customs officials are working relentlessly to maximize revenue collection. Punitive measures and fines are being enforced continuously against those involved in irregularities. We hope to achieve the target with the cooperation of all stakeholders.’
