Judicial Magistrate Md Sujan Mia of Gopalganj Judicial Magistrate Court-2 has been withdrawn after allegedly injuring an apprentice female lawyer by throwing a glass paperweight during court proceedings.
He has been directed to report to Law and Justice Division Section-1 under the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
The directive was issued on Thursday afternoon, July 23 in a letter signed by Deputy Secretary (Admin-1) A.F.M. Goljar Rahman.
Reacting to the withdrawal, former general secretary of the District Bar Association M. Julqaddar Rahman said Judicial Magistrate Sujan Mia received appropriate punishment.
However, he demanded departmental proceedings against the judge for the heinous incident in addition to his withdrawal.
Earlier in the morning, a section of lawyers organized a protest rally and procession demanding the magistrate's withdrawal. The procession began around 10:45AM from the ground floor of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court building and concluded at the District and Sessions Judge Court premises.
According to sources, Magistrate Sujan Mia threw a glass paperweight from the bench on Wednesday after seeing lawyers and litigants talking during court proceedings.
The paperweight struck apprentice female lawyer Sabiha Sultana on the head, causing a bleeding injury. She was immediately taken to Gopalganj Medical College Hospital for treatment.
