President Md. Sahabuddin's resignation preparations complete: Bangabhaban

All preparations for the resignation of President Md. Sahabuddin have been completed.

The secretariat of the Jatiya Sabgsad has called an press briefing at 5PM today over the President's resignation.

Responsible sources at Bangabhaban have confirmed that the next formal steps regarding his resignation will be taken soon. 

According to the Constitution, a President must submit a signed letter of resignation to the Speaker of the National Parliament.

As per constitutional provisions, following the President's resignation, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will assume the duties of the vacant presidential office until a new individual is elected. Additionally, the National Parliament must elect a new President within 90 days of the presidency becoming vacant.

Demands for Md. Sahabuddin's resignation had been intensifying since the political changeover on August 5, 2024. In continuation of this, during the inaugural session of the recently concluded 13th National Parliament, opposition Members of Parliament protested against him during the President's initial address. Md. Sahabuddin, the 22nd President of the country, assumed office at Bangabhaban on April 24, 2023. Under normal circumstances, his five-year term was scheduled to end in April 2028.

His tenure as President was one of the most eventful periods in the country's history. During his time in office, the student-public uprising occurred, the Awami League government fell, the interim government's rule took place, and finally, the 13th National Parliament elections were held. Furthermore, he set a precedent as the only President in the country's history to administer the oath of office to three different heads of government within a short span of time.
