Woman strangled in Barguna: Husband, sister arrested after case filed

A housewife was reportedly strangled to death by her husband over extramarital affair in Amtali upazila of Barguna.

The dead body of Supriya Haldar, 32, was abandoned by her in-laws at the upazila Health Complex and fled the scene. Allegations against Ajay Howlader, 35 claimed he was involved in an extramarital affair.

The victim's mother, Dipali Rani, filed a murder case on Thursday night, naming seven persons, including husband Ajay, her mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and four sister-in-law.

Police has already arrested the husband, Ajay, and his sister, Roma. Roma was sent to jail by a court on Friday.

The incident took place around 9:00PM on Thursday, July 23 in the Harimrityunjay area under Kukua Union of the upazila. The deceased, Supriya, leaves behind an 11-year-old child and a 9-month-old infant.

On information, Amtali police recovered the body from the hospital around 10:30PM. The body was sent to the Barguna General Hospital morgue for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

‘My daughter was killed over an extramarital affair,’ said the victim's mother, Dipali Rani, tearfully. ‘Her husband and in-laws murdered her because he was involved with his younger brother's wife. We demand justice.’

The victim's grandfather, Prafulla Kumar Roy, stated, ‘An hour before her death, she called me saying she was being tortured. Later, my grandson-in-law called to say she had passed away at the hospital. When I arrived, I found everyone had fled, leaving her body behind. I demand exemplary punishment.’

Amtali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Yakub Hossain said the body was sent for post-mortem. A murder case was filed by the victim's mother on Thursday night, naming her husband as the main accused.

‘The husband and his sister have been arrested. Roma was sent to jail, and efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining accused,’ the OC added.
