The Faridpur district unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has expelled one of its leaders from all party positions and its primary membership after an objectionable video allegedly involving him went viral on social media.

The decision to expel Mohammad Obaidur Rahman, 48, organisational secretary of the Aliabad Union BNP unit, was taken at an emergency meeting of the district BNP held on Thursday night (July 23). The matter was later disclosed through a press release signed by Faridpur district BNP Convener Syed Modarres Ali and Member Secretary A K M Kibria.

Obaidur Rahman, a resident of Godadhar Dangi village under Faridpur Sadar upazila, was removed from the party over what the BNP described as involvement in a “morally unacceptable act”.

The press release stated that the party had decided to expel Obaidur Rahman from the primary membership along with his organisational post due to his alleged involvement in an offence related to moral misconduct. It also instructed all BNP leaders and activists not to maintain any organisational relations with him.

According to local sources, a five-minute-37-second video allegedly featuring Obaidur Rahman and a woman recently spread on social media, creating widespread discussion in the district.

Following his expulsion, attempts were made to contact Obaidur Rahman for his comment, but he did not respond to phone calls. Earlier, he had claimed that the video was “created using artificial intelligence (AI).”

Confirming the expulsion, BNP Faridpur district Member Secretary A K M Kibria said the party investigated the matter after the video appeared on social media and decided to take action after finding initial evidence supporting the allegations.
